SQL 2K5 x86 on Windows 2K3 R2 Enterpise SP 3 x64

I have inherited a x86 SQL server 2005 standardinstallation which is on a x64 Windows 2K3 R2 Enterpise SP 3 OS. I wasn't sure you could install an x86 application on a x64 OS. What are the implications of this? Do I still need to enable AWE etc...

Basically, consider this as any 32 bit SQL Server. So, yes, AWE if you want (but no need to PAE - but check Slava Oks blog first just in case). But also I would plan for possibly installing 64 bit instead (at least ask if there's a reason this is 32 bit).

Hi Col

We run SQL 2000 x86 on x64 Windows, and there are some hotfixes you need to stabilise this configuration. (There is no x64 SQL2k)

But for SQL2005, it's much more straightforward. One gotcha: if you do enable AWE, make sure youconfigure a max memory setting.

As Tibor says, if you can change to SQL x64 it makes things easier. Managing OLEDB drivers e.g.
